Top 5 Upcoming Live Action Comic Book Movies

justice-league5. Justice League

Release Date: 11-17-17

Cinematic Universe: DCEU

In a year that will be dominated by big-name comic book movies, all signs currently point to Justice League being one, if not the, biggest heavy-hitter of them all. This DC film is supposed to have a lighter tone and more “fun”. This film will have a strong cast including Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot. However, DC’s lackluster films as of late leave me optimistically concerned.

4. Wonder Woman

Release Date: 6-02-17

Cinematic Universe: DCEU

After the strongly divided response to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. is looking to steer its still-fledgling DCEU into surer waters starting with its first release of the year, Wonder Woman. The Amazonian princess’s first solo outing is a flashback to nearly a century ago during World War I. The different time period, the inclusion of what seems to be a great cast (Gal Gadot and Chris Pine), the vision of the first female director of a major superhero picture (Patty Jenkins) and a greater reliance on a traditional adventure story and, even, more humor all combine to make what might possibly be one of the biggest releases of the year.

3. Thor: Ragnarok

Release Date: 11-03-17

Cinematic Universe: MCU

Thor: Ragnarok is the third, and most likely, final installment in the Thor series. In this film, Thor returns home to Asgard to find out who is attempting to find and unite all the Infinity Stones. Along the way, he must fight off Ragnarok (Norse mythology’s version of apocalypse), team up with the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and help be the bridge to next year’s The Avengers: Infinity War, most likely in the form of protecting the Soul Stone from being claimed by Thanos. There are several other elements of note, as well, starting with the fact that Natalie Portman declined to reprise her role as Jane Foster. However, this film will feature Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and will include portions of the Planet Hulk storyline. In short Ragnarok is quickly solidifying itself as the perfect follow-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming as well as a prelude to Infinity War.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Release Date: 05-05-17

Cinematic Universe: MCU

Guardians is often described as the MCU’s answer to Star Wars. Guardians eschewed Earth almost completely and instead opted to fully embrace the cosmic side of the shared universe, delivering colorful, zany characters and an infectious 80’s soundtrack. This Guardians will have much of the same however it will add Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone to an already great cast. This film also will have nothing to do with the MCU’s ongoing mythology which will also help to set it apart from other comic book films of the year.

1. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Release Date: 7-07-17

Cinematic Universe: MCU

It would not be an exaggeration to say this is the most anticipated comic book movie of 2017. Spidey is one of the most popular and profitable properties in Marvel canon. Add to that Tom Holland’s amazing intro in Civil War, Michael Keaton as the villain and none other than Tony Stark as his mentor and you have the formula for a fantastic film.

Honorable Mention:

Logan

Release Date: 3-03-17

Cinematic Universe: X-Men

Logan is the third and final installment in Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine franchise. The film will be loosely based on the Old Man Logan comic book storyline. The film is set in a dystopian future in which Wolverine may be man’s final hope. Logan will also feature fan-favorites X-23 and Nathaniel Essex in what looks to be a very promising film.
