5. Fences (Dec. 25)
Denzel Washington and Viola Davis . . . ‘nuff said. Denzel has proven himself time and again in Malcolm X, Training Day, and Glory just to name a few. Of course Viola Davis has shown her ability in How to Get Away With Murder and her Oscar win for The Help. With an interesting plot and some fantastic actors, Fences will definitely showcase some outstanding drama performances. Both Washington and Davis have proven their acting chops and there’s no doubt in my mind that Fences will be a fantastic drama.
4. Passengers (Dec. 21)
Passengers could be a great success with some of the highest paid actors, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. With Pratt and Lawrence playing off one another this is sure to be an intriguing film to say the least. Passengers has also presented us with a somewhat original sci-fi plot. Chris Pratt will draw the crowds with his name recognition and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence will mesmerize us with her acting ability.
3. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Dec. 16)
Disney will once again tempt moviegoers to the theaters to see this latest installment in the Star Wars saga. Hopefully introducing Darth Vader will not ruin his iconic impact, but will instead further his story and character in the timeline. The trailers have shown us only morsels of great characters and fantastic cinematography. With captivating trailers, Rogue One is sure to be a success.
2. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Nov. 18)
Potter fans unite! We’ve waited long enough to catch another glimpse into JK Rowling’s wizard universe. Although Harry Potter and his crew will not be the focus, it will still be exciting to watch this extraordinary universe come to life again. From the looks of it, I think Fantastic Beasts will definitely satisfy a craving among fans.
1. Doctor Strange (Nov. 4)
From his portrayal of Khan to Sherlock Holmes, we have come to expect great things from Benedict Cumberbatch. Putting Cumberbatch into an already solid Marvel Cinematic Universe seems like a match made in comic book heaven. Time will tell with this film, but from the trailers and casting I think we are in for a treat.
Honorable Mentions: Moana (Nov. 23) and Assassin’s Creed (Dec. 21)
Moana will be adding a new Disney princess to the roster. It’s nice to see a little diversity being added to the ever-growing list of Princess’s.
Assassin’s Creed is also set to release in late December. Although films based on video games have never proven to be great successes, I believe that Michael Fassbender may be able to change this stereotype.
